WAIS Acronym of Wide Area Information Servers. A commercial software package that allows the indexing of huge quantities of information, and then making those indices searchable across networks such as the Internet.
WAL Acronym of Write-Ahead Logging. A recovery process of a database.
WAN Acronym of Wide-Area Network. A collection of computers whose interconnection network spans large distances, often by using telephone lines or microwave communications.
weblog A weblog or blog is a usually non-commercial listing of text, images, and/or other objects that are arranged in a chronological order. Blogs are often maintained and run by a single individual, updated daily, and/or contain random personal remark about a topic, a personal ramble, an update on the persons life and/or their current feelings. In many ways many weblogs are like a personal journal or diary or a look into another individuals life and can be a great way to learn about people, events, places, and much more from millions of people around the world.
WIA Acronym of Windows Image Acquisition. Windows Image Acquisition enables imaging programs, such as Microsoft Picture It! 2000, Kodak Imaging, or Adobe Photoshop, to communicate with imaging devices such as digital cameras and scanners. WIA supports digital still cameras and both low-end and high-end scanners; it also enables you to retrieve still images from IEEE 1394-based digital video (DV) camcorders and Universal Serial Bus (USB) Web cameras.
Wifi Acronym of Wireless Fidelity. A certification for 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g equipment by the Wi-fi alliance.
Wireless bridge Literally a bridge between to different networks or communication standards. For example to connect wireless two wired networks through two access points.
WORM 1) Acronym of Write Once, Read Many memory. A type of disk that can be written only once but read many times, like some optical disks. 2) A type of virus.
WWW Acronym of World-Wide Web; that part of Internet where everyone with a PC and Internet access can display information or can download information; the whole constellation of resources that can be accessed using Gopher, FTP, HTTP, telnet, USENET, WAIS and some other tools. Also the universe of hypertextserver (HTTP servers) which are the servers that allow text, graphics, sound files, etc. to be mixed together. See also BBS. On August 6th 1991 Tim Berners-Lee published the first version of his hypertextsoftware on the alt.hypertext-newsgroup. It included a description of the basic concepts webserver and browser. Six months earlier Berners-Lee had constructed the first webbrowser named "WorldWideWeb". In order to avoid confusion it was later renamed to Nexus. In 1990 he had a already filed a proposal for a hypertext system to CERN where he worked at that time. The publication of this hypertextsoftware was the moment that the World Wide Web came into existence. The first webserver outside Europe was setup in the US in December 1991. A year later there were 26 webservers online. In 1996 the WWW consisted of about 340 thousand websites, while nowadays it is estimated that about 100 biljon websites are online.
