UMB Acronym for Upper Memory Block; a 384 KB large, noncontiguous section of allocable memory located between 640 KB en 1024 KB.
UNC Acronym for Universal Naming Convention. The standard way of describing network servers and their directories under MS-DOS and Windows NT/XP. A name in UNC format consists of two backslashes followed by the server name, optionally followed by another backslash and a list of backslash-separated fields; for example \SERVER1\SHARED-DIR\SUBDIR1\SUBDIR2\FILENAME.EXT.

UNIX A multi-user operating system that AT&T Bell Laboratories introduced in the early 1970s and is now a favorite operating system for a wide variety of systems.
up A functioning computer or network. Opposite of down.
up and running Perfectly functioning.
upload The process of placing data(files) on a BBS or the WWW with a modem. See also download.

USART Acronym for Universal Synchronous/Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter.
USB Acronym for Universal Serial Bus which is the successor of the serial port.
USENET Acronym for the User Network. A world-wide system of discussion groups, with comments passed among hundreds of thousands of machines. Not all USENET machines are on the Internet, maybe half. USENET is completely"decentralized, with over 50,000 discussion areas, called newsgroups. Newsgroups can be divided into two categories: world newsgroups, which are distributed automatically to all Usenet sites, and alternative newsgroups.
USRT Acronym for Universal Synchronous Receiver Transmitter.
utility A supplemental routine or program used for performing specific tasks like changing the systemenvironment.
UUENCODE Acronym for Unix to Unix Encoding. A method for converting files from Binary to ASCII (text) so that they can be sent across the Internet via E-mail.
