nerd Expert and authority of great honour or someone thinks he/she is. Also used as offensive word in the meaning of an individual who is obsessed with science, math and/or technology and commonly has very little or no social skills. See also nitwit.
NETBIOS Acronym of network Basic Input Output System. The NETBIOS was introduced at the same time IBM announced the PC network in 1984. NETBIOS, now distributed as a memory resident program, is a complete replacement for the original ROM versions.
NLQ Short for Near Letter Quality. A dot matrix printing mode where the characters resemble typewritten, or letter-quality, characters.
NMI Non-Maskable Interrupt. An interrupt which can not be disabled by clearing the CPU´s interrupt enable flag, unlike most normal interrupts. Non-maskable interrupts are typically used to signal calamities which require immediate action, such as a hardware failure or eminent loss of power.
node A point where hardware is connected to transmission lines.
noise 1) Unidentifiable marks on an image or on the screen. 2) Audio or video pollution that interferes with the clarity of the sound or image signal being transmitted. 3) Irrelevant commentary on newsgroup.
NOS Acronym of network Operating System. A NOS is the software necessary to integrate the many components of a network into a single system to which an end-user may have access.
NSCA Acronym of National Center for Supercomputing Applications.
NSP Acronym of network Service Provider. Refers to the owner of the network. The service provider may be a different organization.
NTSC Acronym of National Television Systems Committee; an industrial organisation that has determined the standard for color television in America (525 horizontal lines per frame and 30 frames per second using interlaced-scan-technology).
NVRAM Acronym of Non-Volatile RAM. Memory which can be modified like normal RAM but does not lose its contents when the system´s power is turned off. This memory may be powered by a battery when the system power is off, or it may be a type of memory which does not need electricity to maintain its contents, such as EEPROM or bubble memory.
