Gamma correction This is a method to correct the lightness or darkness of pictures, so that the pictures appear with the same brightness on any monitor.
gateway 1) The technical meaning is a hardware or software set-up that translates between two dissimilar protocols. 2) A site on one online service that lets you operate on another online service. Also called router.
Geek An individual who enjoys computers and technology and frequently uses the computer in his or her free time rather than participating in any other activities. While a Geek shares some similarities to a nerd or a hacker, they are not the same.
General Protection Fault A rather notorious problem eminent in Windows versions before Windows 98.
Geographic Information System The representation of objects in space and the processing of queries on those objects are specific areas of investigation that are being heavily pursued by the developers of GISs.
GFLOPS Acronym for Giga (billions) of FLoating-point Operations Per Second.
glassfiber A very thin fiber used for transport of digital data in the form of lightpulses.
Global Satellite Messaging A very accurate positioning system, which uses satellites and computernetworks.
Global System for Mobile Communications A digital mobile telephone system that is widely used in Europe and other parts of the world. GSM uses a variation of time division multiple access (TDMA) and is the most widely used of the three digital wireless telephone technologies (TDMA, GSM, and CDMA). GSM digitizes and compresses data, then sends it down a channel with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot. It operates at either the 900 MHz or 1800 MHz frequency band. GSM together with other technologies is part of an evolution of wireless mobile telemmunication that includes High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data (HCSD), General Packet Radio System (GPRS), Enhanced Data GSM Environment (EDGE), and Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS).
gopher More or less the predecessor of the WWW. Gopher files are text-only and look therefore not so sophisticated as the WWW-files. It is also the name of a navigation service.
grayscale A way of representing shades of color on a screen or printer that has less color capability than a drawing it is to display or print. It does so by using halftone patterns to create a range of gray shades. Each original color is assigned to a different shade of gray rather than just a black or white value.
