Fast Ethernet Fast Ethernet is also referred to as 100BASE-T or 802.3u and is a communications protocol that enables computers on a local area network to share information with one another at rates of 100 million bits per second instead of the standard 10 million BPS of Ethernet. Fast Ethernet works over Category 5 twisted-pair wiring.
FAT file Allocation Table; A data structure on disk that records which clusters are free, which are unusable, and which have been allocated. The clusters occupied by a file are linked into a list in the file allocation table, allowing DOS or Windows to find the contents of the file.
fax facsimile a device that transmits written down information via the telephone line. Currently the fax is usually integrated with the modem. The socalled faxmodem.
FCBS file Controlling Block Structure; A data record in the calling program´s address space which is used by DOS 1.x functions to record the state of an open file.
FCONSOLE virtualfile server CONSOLE. The FCONSOLE is an advanced NetWare utility designed to allow remote execution of file-server console commands from any workstation on the network.
FDD Floppy-Disk Drive; drive A: and/or B: of your PC.
feature frozen Means that no new features will be added to the software. So when a beta version is feature frozen then you may assume that the final product has the same features and number of features as the beta version.
feedback page A webpage wherein users can express comments or remarks via E-mail. You can also express your comments on this page via my feedback page.
FIFO First In First Out Storage Policy. A policy for certain memory-accessing operations that retrieves the item stored for the longest time; the storage policy of a queue. See also FEFO, FILO, LIFO, queue.
File Transfer protocol The standard protocol for copying files from one machine to another on a TCP/IP (Internet) network. Also the program of the same name with which a user may transfer files.
file_id file identification. Usually a short textfile in an archive with a short description of an application. See also .diz.
fill color A color used to fill a large area, as opposed to drawing individual lines; if you see a drawn circle and the inside area of the circle is yellow, yellow is the fill color.
floppy Replaceable magnetic disc in a plastic cover. Two sizes are available 5.25 inch, and 3.5 inch; the capacity varies between 360 KB, 720 KB, 1.44 or 2.88 MB depending on the type.
FLOPS Acronym of FLoating Point Operations Per Second.
font A graphical style which is used consequently for all of the characters in one type face. Within a font family there can be several variations of the same typeface.
footer A text that is repeated on the bottom of all pages in a document. See also header.
freeware Software that is released into the public domain. It is free and may be distributed freely. Compare to shareware.
Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum A technology used in Bluetooth and 802.11
Frequency Modulation A method of encoding data as a series of magnetic flux reversals on disk or tape, commonly known as single-density recording. In frequency modulation, a series of clock pulses are written at regular intervals, with one data bit for each clock pulse. See also MFM, RLL, AM.
Front end Front end and back end are terms used to characterize program interfaces and services relative to the initial user of these interfaces and services. A "front-end" application is one that application users interact with directly. See also back end.
